Trade policy reviews
During 2010 the Trade Policy Review Body (TPR B) reviewed 19 WTO members: Malaysia, El Salvador, Croatia, Armenia, Albania, the People’s Republic of China, Malawi, the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu (Chinese Taipei), The Gambia, Honduras, the United States, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Sri Lanka, Belize, Papua New Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Hong Kong, China. The Chair’s concluding remarks for these reviews are reproduced below.
Trade obstacles to SME participation in trade
Section D investigates the major trade-related impediments to SMEs’ participation in trade. A key finding in this section is that all types of trade costs, whether they are fixed or variable, adversely affect the ability of SMEs to participate in trade, to a greater extent than large enterprises. Since SMEs are more sensitive to trade barriers than large firms, removing obstacles to trade benefits SMEs disproportionately. It is therefore important to understand what these major obstacles are.
World trade and GDP growth in 2016 and early 2017
Growth in the volume of world merchandise trade slowed to 1.3 per cent in 2016, down from 2.6 per cent in 2015, as continuing weakness in the global economy and low commodity prices had a negative impact on global import demand.
