Introduction
The Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM) was first established on a trial basis by the GATT contracting parties in April 1989. The Mechanism became a permanent feature of the World Trade Organization under the Marrakesh Agreement which established the WTO in January 1995.
Trade in goods
During its five formal sessions in 2009, the Council for Trade in Goods made progress on the consideration of requests from WTO members for waivers, further discussed what role, if any, it should play in the textiles and clothing sector following the termination of the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing, and dealt with other routine tasks.

Organization, secretariat and budget
The World Trade Organization came into being in 1995, as the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which had been established (1947) in the wake of the Second World War. The WTO’s main objective is the establishment of rules for Members’ trade policy which help international trade to expand with a view to raising living standards. These rules foster non-discrimination, transparency and predictability in the conduct of trade policy.

Accession à l’OMC
En 2012, le Monténégro, la Russie, le Samoa et le Vanuatu ont officiellement accédé à l’OMC, ce qui a porté le nombre de Membres à 157 (à la fin de décembre 2012). Deux autres pays, la République démocratique populaire lao (Laos) et le Tadjikistan, ont conclu leur accord d’accession pendant l’année et sont devenus Membres au début de 2013. L’OMC se rapproche ainsi un peu plus de son objectif d’universalité. En 2012, le Conseil général a pris des mesures pour faciliter le processus d’accession des pays les moins avancés (PMA). Des mesures ont aussi été prises pour renforcer l’assistance technique fournie aux PMA en vue de leur accession.

The fourth Trade Policy Review of Bangladesh has considerably improved our understanding of Bangladesh’s trade and trade-related policies and practices and how they have evolved since 2006. We are grateful for the active participation of the Bangladesh delegation headed by H.E. Mr Md. Ghulam Hussain and the discussant, Ambassador Faizel Ismail, for his insightful remarks. I would also like to thank Members of the TPRB for contributing to the meeting’s useful exchange of views. Bangladesh’s response to the large number of questions is also much appreciated.

En 2012, l’accession du Monténégro, de la Russie, du Samoa et du Vanuatu a porté à 157 le nombre de Membres de l’OMC. Le Conseil général a en outre approuvé l’accession du Laos et du Tadjikistan, qui ont ainsi pu devenir Membres au début de 2013. Les Membres de l’OMC ont poursuivi leurs efforts pour sortir de l’impasse les négociations du Cycle de Doha et ils ont tous exprimé le souhait de parvenir à un résultat positif à la neuvième Conférence ministérielle, qui se tiendra à Bali (Indonésie) du 3 au 6 décembre 2013.
Contactos con los medios de comunicación
La Décima Conferencia Ministerial contó con la asistencia de unos 350 periodistas, entre ellos 12 procedentes de países menos adelantados (PMA) cuya participación fue apoyada por la OMC. La OMC organizó diversas actividades de formación para periodistas, incluidos seminarios en Ginebra, y los funcionarios de prensa de la OMC participaron en varias actividades nacionales y regionales de proyección exterior. El número de reuniones de información y conferencias de prensa de la OMC aumentó a 53, frente a 42 en el año anterior, por el interés de los medios de comunicación en el 20º aniversario de la OMC y en el proceso preparatorio de la Conferencia Ministerial de Nairobi.
