WTO report finds no acceleration in trade restrictions but slow pace for barrier removal: WTO members have continued to show some restraint in introducing new trade-restrictive measures and have also adopted a record number of trade facilitation measures during the period of October 2014 to October 2015 according to the Director-General’s annual report on trade-related developments. However the report which was discussed at the 9 December meeting of the Trade Policy Review Body (TPRB) raises concerns over the increase in the stockpile of trade-restrictive measures recorded since 2008.

Trade Profiles 2015 provides one-page snapshots of the most relevant indicators on growth trade and trade policy measures for over 200 economies including all 161 WTO members. The data provided include basic economic indicators (such as gross domestic product) trade policy indicators (such as tariffs import duties the number of disputes notifications outstanding and contingency measures in force) merchandise trade flows (broken down by broad product categories and major origins and destinations) services trade flows (with a breakdown by major components) and industrial property indicators.

WTO reports levelling of new G20 trade restrictions but stockpile grows: The WTO’s fourteenth trade monitoring report on G20 trade measures issued on 2 November shows the application of new trade-restrictive measures by G20 economies remained stable compared to the previous reporting period. Although the report shows relative restraint by G20 economies in introducing new trade restrictions the stockpile of measures continues to grow. Because the uncertain global economic outlook continues to have a negative impact on international trade the report calls on G20 leaders to deliver on their pledge to refrain from implementing new protectionist measures and to roll back existing trade-restrictive measures.

Increasing stockpile of trade-restrictive measures “a cause for concern”: The increasing stockpile of trade-restrictive measures introduced by WTO members remains a cause for concern and continued vigilance is required according to the latest report on trade-related developments presented on 23 July by WTO Director General Roberto Azevêdo. On the positive side an increasing number of trade-liberalizing measures such as tariff-cutting measures were adopted by WTO members during the period under review 16 October 2014 to 15 May 2015.

Report on G20 Trade Measures (2015)
WTO sees “slight deceleration” in G20 trade restrictions but calls for continued vigilance: The WTO’s thirteenth trade monitoring report on G20 trade measures issued on 15 June shows a slight deceleration in the application of new trade-restrictive measures by G20 economies with the average number of such measures applied per month lower than at any time since 2013. The report also underlines that it is not yet clear that this deceleration will continue and it calls on G20 leaders to show continued vigilance and reinforced determination towards eliminating existing trade restrictions.

DDG Agah notes no acceleration of new restrictions urges more trade transparency: Deputy Director-General Yonov Frederick Agah in presenting the Director-General’s report on trade-related developments (mid-November 2013 to mid-May 2014) to the Trade Policy Review Body on 11 July 2014 said that “the pace at which new trade restrictions have been introduced has not accelerated during the period under review”. He urged members to provide more trade information for the monitoring reports: “I am convinced and the Director-General’s recent meetings with business groups have confirmed this that members must accept their collective responsibility for promoting the transparency and predictability which importers and exporters demand”.

Report on G20 Trade Measures (2014)
Azevêdo reports trade restrictions down slightly urges G-20 leadership on post-Bali agenda: The WTO’s report on G-20 trade measures issued on 18 June 2014 said that “G-20 members put in place 112 new trade restrictive measures during the period mid November 2013 to mid-May 2014 — slightly down from the 116 new restrictive measures introduced in the previous period from mid-May to mid-November 2013”. Director-General Roberto Azevêdo said that “ it is clear that the coat of trade restrictions has grown a bit thicker over this period…this will not help our efforts to support growth and development around the world — and therefore we must remain watchful”.

Azevêdo’s health-check on global trade: Growth recovering but restrictions on the rise: Director-General Roberto Azevêdo in presenting his first global trade-monitoring report to WTO members on 17 February 2014 said that trade growth projections for this year are “much improved hovering somewhere between 4.0% and 4.5%.” However he said “407 new restrictive measures were reported during the review period” affecting 1.3 % of world merchandise imports—valued at $240 billion.

G-20 trade restrictions increase as trade flows slow down says WTO report: In the last six months most G-20 members have put in place new trade restrictions or measures that have the potential to restrict trade according to the latest WTO report on G-20 trade measures published on 18 December 2013. A total of 116 new trade restrictive measures were identified since the last WTO report up from 109 measures recorded for the previous seven-month period.

World Trade Report 2013
The world is changing with extraordinary rapidity driven by many influences including shifts in production and consumption patterns continuing technological innovation new ways of doing business and of course policy. The World Trade Report 2013 focuses on how trade is both a cause and an effect of change and looks into the factors shaping the future of world trade. One of the most significant drivers of change is technology. Not only have revolutions in transport and communications transformed our world but new developments such as 3D printing and the continuing spread of information technology will continue to do so. Trade and foreign direct investment together with a greater geographical spread of income growth and opportunity will integrate a growing number of countries into more extensive international exchange. Higher incomes and larger populations will put new strains on both renewable and non-renewable resources calling for careful resource management. Environmental issues will also call for increasing attention.
