Mid-November 2013 to Mid-October 2014Azevêdo says rise in trade restrictions “cause for concern”: Director-General Roberto Azevêdo, in introducing his annual report “Developments in the International Trading Environment” to the Trade Policy Review Body on 8 December, said that “the stock of trade restrictions introduced by WTO members since 2008 continues to rise”. He said that “in a climate of economic uncertainty the continued accumulation of trade-restrictive measures poses a clear risk”.

The WTO's dispute settlement system follows a detailed timetable for examining cases brought to the WTO. The first stage is examination of the case by a group of three panellists who are specially selected for the case. Report on G20 Trade Measures (2012)
Mid-May 2012 to Mid-October 2012Lamy reports slowdown in G-20 trade restrictions but warns trade frictions on the rise: Director-General Pascal Lamy, in his report on G-20 trade measures issued on 31 October 2012, said that “there has been a slowdown in the imposition of new trade restrictive measures by G-20 economies over the past five months”. However, “at a time of continuous economic difficulties, trade frictions seem to be increasing”. He urged G-20 governments “to redouble their efforts to keep their markets open, and to advance trade opening as a way to counter slowing global economic growth”.

Mid-November 2013 to Mid-May 2014DDG Agah notes no acceleration of new restrictions, urges more trade transparency: Deputy Director-General Yonov Frederick Agah, in presenting the Director-General’s report on trade-related developments (mid-November 2013 to mid-May 2014) to the Trade Policy Review Body on 11 July 2014, said that “the pace at which new trade restrictions have been introduced has not accelerated during the period under review”. He urged members to provide more trade information for the monitoring reports: “I am convinced, and the Director-General’s recent meetings with business groups have confirmed this, that members must accept their collective responsibility for promoting the transparency and predictability which importers and exporters demand”.

The disputes are presented in chronological order (by dispute settlement number). Applied MFN TariffsWorld Tariff Profiles 2017 provides comprehensive information on the tariffs and non-tariff measures imposed by over 170 countries and customs territories. The publication starts with a breakdown of the tariffs imposed by these economies. The data is presented in summary tables and in individual one page profiles for each economy. This is followed by a section on the use of nontariff measures, which are becoming increasingly important in international trade. The special topic for this edition is an article entitled “Export diversification”, which gives an analysis of export diversification indicators over time. The publication is jointly prepared by the World Trade Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the International Trade Centre (ITC).

Mid-October 2012 to Mid-November 2013Azevêdo’s health-check on global trade: Growth recovering but restrictions on the rise: Director-General Roberto Azevêdo, in presenting his first global trade-monitoring report to WTO members on 17 February 2014, said that trade growth projections for this year are “much improved, hovering somewhere between 4.0% and 4.5%.” However, he said “407 new restrictive measures were reported during the review period,” affecting 1.3 % of world merchandise imports—valued at $240 billion.

Aranceles NMF AplicadosLa publicación “Perfiles arancelarios en el mundo 2018” ofrece información exhaustiva sobre los aranceles impuestos por más de 170 países y territorios aduaneros. La publicación comienza con un desglose de los aranceles impuestos por esas economías. Los datos se presentan en cuadros sinópticos y en perfiles individuales de una página para cada economía. A continuación figura una sección sobre la utilización de las medidas no arancelarias, que están adquiriendo una importancia cada vez mayor en el comercio internacional. El tema especial de esta edición es un artículo sobre la diversificación de las exportaciones, en el que se analizan los indicadores de diversificación de las exportaciones a lo largo del tiempo. Droits NPF AppliquésLa publication intitulée « Profils tarifaires dans le monde 2018 » donne des renseignements complets sur les droits imposés par plus de 170 pays et territoires douaniers. La publication commence par une ventilation des droits de douane appliqués par ces économies. Les données sont présentées dans des tableaux récapitulatifs et sous forme de profils individuels d’une page pour chaque économie. Vient ensuite une section qui porte sur l’utilisation des mesures non tarifaires, qui sont de plus en plus importantes dans le commerce international. Cette édition traite en particulier de la diversification des exportations, à laquelle elle consacre un article qui analyse l’évolution des indicateurs de la diversification des exportations au fil du temps. Cette publication est établie conjointement par l’Organisation mondiale du commerce, la Conférence des Nations Unies sur le commerce et le développement (CNUCED) et le Centre du commerce international (ITC).

Mid-October 2012 to Mid-May 2013WTO warns G-20 trade restrictions continue to accumulate as pace of removal remains slow: Director-General Pascal Lamy, in his report on G-20 trade measures issued on 17 June 2013, said that “more than 100 trade-restrictive measures were implemented by G-20 economies over the past seven months, covering around 0.5% of G-20 merchandise imports”. He called on the G-20 to “take positive steps to unlock the potential for trade to grow stronger by ensuring a successful outcome at the next Ministerial Conference in Bali”.

Mid-October 2014 to Mid-May 2015Increasing stockpile of trade-restrictive measures “a cause for concern”: The increasing stockpile of trade-restrictive measures introduced by WTO members remains a cause for concern, and continued vigilance is required, according to the latest report on trade-related developments presented on 23 July by WTO Director General Roberto Azevêdo. On the positive side, an increasing number of trade-liberalizing measures, such as tariff-cutting measures, were adopted by WTO members during the period under review, 16 October 2014 to 15 May 2015.
